Thief cuts lock to steal Grade 9 student’s bike outside high school in Nanaimo

Nanaimo Mounties are looking for help with identifying a suspected bicycle thief.

According to a Nanaimo RCMP press release, an individual had allegedly stolen a chained black and red Supercycle mountain bike, which belonged to a Grade 9 student, outside Wellington Secondary on Mexicana Drive at approximately 3:30 p.m. on June 2.

“Police reviewed video surveillance and observed the suspect walk up to the bicycle, remove a set of bolt cutters from his backpack, then cut the lock. The suspect then rode off on the bike,” noted the release.

The suspect is described as being approximately 5-foot-10, between 25-30 years old, with short blond hair and a muscular build.

In the video surveillance footage, the person is seen carrying a backpack, wearing a black face mask, sleeveless grey-coloured shirt and blue jeans.

The stolen bike’s serial number is AH15E087496, noted the release.

If anyone has information on this incident or on the identity of the suspect, they are asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2022-18833.
