Coast Bastion Inn workers have reached a tentative three-year agreement with their employer.
The contract covers workers at four Coast Hotels – Nanaimo, Victoria, Prince George and Kelowna – and the company hopes employees ratify the agreement today (Nov. 8), said Coast Bastion general manager Volker Grady.
“We’re delighted,” he said, adding that negotiations started in July and finished last Saturday, following threat of strike action.
No one from Unite Here Local 40, the employees’ union, was available for comment, but the union’s website states that Coast Bastion Inn workers voted 90 per cent in favour of strike action two weeks ago and last week, 72-hour strike notice was issued for the Nanaimo and Victoria Coast Hotels.
It also states that the bargaining committee is recommending the tentative deal to workers.
Grady said the tentative deal is for all employees at the Coast Bastion Inn – the hotel employs almost 100 people, both full-time and part-time and while he is unable to talk about details of the contract until it is ratified, he thinks it is beneficial to both employees and the employer.
“We benefit through their loyalty and enthusiasm,” he said. “Happy and healthy [employees] makes for a happy work environment and ultimately that’s what we like our customers to see.”
