A teenager is in hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in Nanaimo.
The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. this morning, Nov. 3, at while the youth was in the crosswalk at the intersection of Bruce Avenue and Seventh Street, near John Barsby Secondary School.
Police, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and B.C. Ambulance attended the scene.
“We’ve spoken to several independent witnesses who indicate that the driver of the vehicle may not have yielded to the kid in the crosswalk,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
The vehicle, a panel van driven by a man in his 50s, has been seized for a mechanical inspection. The driver remained at the scene and co-operated with investigators.
“We are certainly looking at contributing factors, such as the driver possibly being distracted. We’re looking at the weather and we’re still gathering evidence,” O’Brien said.
The van was travelling southbound on Bruce Avenue when the collision occurred.
Investigators have ruled out alcohol and drugs as contributing factors.
Anyone who has dash cam video of the incident or witnessed the collision is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2020-40114.
