Tax notices mailed to City of Nanaimo residents

NANAIMO – Tax notices for 2016 have been mailed and are due to be paid July 4.

Thousands of City of Nanaimo residents will be finding tax notices in the mail.

The city sent out 2016 property tax notices last week, which are due July 4.

“If you haven’t received your property tax notice by now, please contact our office,” said Diane Hiscock, the city’s manager of revenue services. “It is important to claim your Home Owner Grant, if eligible, and pay your taxes on time to avoid penalties.”

The tax notices will include a 0.6 per cent overall tax increase as a result of levies the city collects for other agencies, such as the Regional District of Nanaimo. It translates into approximately $19 for the average home assessed at $348,363.

Increases or decreases to the previous year’s property tax amount depends on changes to a property’s assessment value relative to the average market change of 4.3 per cent, a city press release says.
