Suspect sought by police after purse snatching at Country Club Centre in Nanaimo

Incident took place May 2 at food court, says Nanaimo RCMP

A suspect is sought after a woman had her purse stolen while at Country Club Centre last month.

The incident took place Monday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the mall food court, when a woman sat down and placed her purse over the back of a chair, stated a Nanaimo RCMP press release.

When she got up to leave, her purse was gone, could not be found and mall security and police where then contacted. Her purse was found a short time later near the JYSK store. The woman noted everything was intact, save for her BMO bank card, which was subsequently cancelled.

Closed-circuit TV footage from mall security was provided. The suspect is described as a Caucasian woman, between 40-55 years old with a medium build, said the press release, with dark hair tied in a bun, standing 5-feet-5, wearing a blue face mask, a black jacket, black pants and carrying a paperback book.

“The still image of the suspect captured on CCTV cameras show her carrying a paperback book. Investigators believe that she may have been sitting in the food court prior to the theft and therefore someone may remember her,” reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, said in the press release.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, quoting file #2022-14698.
