Suspect busted after attempting restaurant break-in

NANAIMO – Marijuana found on suspect who attempted to break into restaurant.

One can only speculate about what motivated a suspect, caught with marijuana on his person, to try breaking into a restaurant.

Jason Paul Klughart, 23, of Nanaimo, was scheduled to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Friday after he allegedly attempted to break into Original Joe's Restaurant and Bar in Country Club Centre.

Police were alerted just before 6:30 a.m. Thursday when a witness called 911 about a man with his face covered who was trying to break through the restaurant's exterior glass patio doors.

When police arrived a few minutes later, the accused fled on his bicycle, which resulted in a 40-minute long bicycle/foot chase involving multiple police officers and an RCMP dog services team.

Klughart was found hiding under a tarp on the patio of another restaurant nearby.

A search of Klughart's clothing turned up a small quantity of marijuana.

Klughart faces charges including one count of attempted break and enter, disguise with intent, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.
