Student orientation day rocks at university

Rock the VIU annual festivities get hundreds of new students familiar with campus and staff

Hundreds of new students got to know their way around Vancouver Island University’s Nanaimo campus last week in time for the start of the fall semester.

Rock the VIU 2018 was held Thursday at the university.

The event, one of the biggest held on the campus annually, gets students entering their first year of post-secondary education familiar with the campus and faculty with a day of activities that include welcoming ceremonies featuring a traditional Coast Salish welcome, presentations from senior students, lunch and block parties, hosted by the university’s various education departments.

The day of activities is a welcome orientation for incoming foreign students who chose to come to study in Canada and specifically Nanaimo.

“I’ve read a lot about the community, so I’ve come here to be part of it, maybe eventually make a difference here, something new; bring an international flavour here, bring international business here, hopefully, someday and maybe make it part of the growing community,” said Kazi Mohammed Faisal, who came from Dubai to study at VIU’s masters in business administration program.
