Strong winds cause numerous power outages, cancel ferry sailings in Nanaimo

Environment Canada issues wind warning with northwesterly winds of 70 km/h gusting to 90 km/h

Numerous residents in the Nanaimo area are without power due to strong winds that blew through the area.

According to B.C. Hydro’s website, over 28,000 customers are affected in outages across Nanaimo. There are also outages affecting 2,800 customers in an area including Cedar and Gabriola Island, according to B.C. Hydro.

Crews are responding to the outages, B.C. Hydro said in a social media post. As of midnight, Nov. 5, an area including Mallard and College drives had crews on scene, with power estimated to be restored by 12:55 a.m. Crews were also on scene at an area, including Groveland and Monterey drives, with no estimated time when power would be restored.

The wind also caused B.C. Ferries to cancel sailings from Nanaimo to Gabriola Island. According to a social media post, B.C. Ferries said sailings will be cancelled for the remainder of the night.

A wind warning was issued by Environment Canada for the area at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 4, with northwesterly winds of 70 kilometres an hour, gusting to 90 km/h with the highest winds near the water.

Winds are expected to ease overnight, Environment Canada said.
