Stolen truck recovered by Nanaimo RCMP in under 30 minutes

David McCauley, 47, faces possession of stolen property, break-in tools charges

A truck was recovered in under half an hour after being reported stolen this week, say police in Nanaimo.

The pickup truck was reported stolen at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, at a parking lot at Nanaimo North Town Centre, said a Nanaimo RCMP press release, when the owner, who works at the mall, saw his vehicle being driven away by an unknown person.

Several police officers and unmarked vehicles responded, said the press release, and eight minutes later the truck was spotted headed south on the old Island Highway. The police followed until the driver parked the truck at a parking lot on Larch Street, where they arrested the suspect and took him into custody, the press release said.

David McCauley, 47, of Nanaimo faces charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of break-in tools. He was held in custody and appeared in provincial court in Nanaimo earlier today, March 24. His next court date is scheduled for April 5.

Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson, said the suspect was taken aback when arrested.

“I think it’s fair to say the suspect was more than a little surprised to find himself surrounded by police and in handcuffs, just 20 minutes after allegedly stealing the vehicle,” O’Brien said in the press release.
