Nanaimo residents are being asked to adhere to lawn watering restrictions as May begins.

The City of Nanaimo, District of Lantzville and most Regional District of Nanaimo electoral areas will enter into Stage 2 restrictions beginning Monday, May 1, an RDN press release noted. Under the regulations, those who live at even-numbered addresses will be permitted to water lawns on even-numbered days and those at odd-numbered addresses can water on odd-numbered days.

Sprinkling is permitted for a maximum of two hours between 7 -10 a.m. and 7-10 p.m. Vegetable garden watering and drip irrigation are exempt from restrictions, the press release said.

The Decourcey Water Service Area south of Nanaimo, including parts of Pylades Drive, is at Stage 4 restrictions, which prohibits lawn watering, car washing and filling fountains and pools. Hand-watering and drip and micro irrigation are only permitted between 7-10 a.m. or 7-10 p.m. Vegetable gardens and fruit trees can be watered.

The mid Island has been affected by below-average precipation last fall followed by a dry winter, the release noted. Provincial drought levels for the eastern section of Vancouver Island have remained at Level 3 during the winter months. Despite slightly above average rain and temperature forecast for spring, drought conditions are anticipated to continue due to low winter precipitation. As such, the RDN must take proactive measures to meet anticipated summer-time water demands, according to the press release.
