South-end store robbed at knifepoint

NANAIMO – Police are investigating an armed robbery involving a knife at a south-end convenience store on Sunday night.

Nanaimo RCMP said in a press release that a man robbed the James General Store on Victoria Road at about 7:50 p.m. when he allegedly brandished a long-bladed knife or machete and demanded the female clerk hand over money from the till.

The suspect grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and ran off down Victoria Road.

No one was injured in the incident.

Officers and a police dog were on scene within minutes, but failed to locate the suspect, described as possibly Caucasian, in his mid 30s, 6-foot-3 with a muscular build. He wore sunglasses, a grey scarf covering his face, gloves, a dark puffy jacket, dark pants and a dark tuque.

Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance video.
