Soccer net scorched

NANAIMO – Vandals set soccer goal net alight at north Nanaimo soccer pitch.

Police are looking for who was responsible for setting a soccer goal net on fire over the weekend.

The incident happened at Harry Wipper Park on Williamson Road in Nanaimo’s Hammond Bay neighbourhood at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

The net appeared to have been set on fire in several places, said Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention office, who had only had a chance to view photographs of the damage Monday morning.

Ian Blackwood, manager of parks maintenance and construction for the City of Nanaimo, said goal nets are supplied by local soccer associations and the various groups choose whether to take them down after games.

He said the nets are worth about $200 or $400 depending on quality.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com.
