Chief Mike Wyse of the Snuneymuxw First Nation will be taking a temporary medical leave from his duties as of this week.

A press release from SFN stated that Wyse has been undergoing health examinations earlier this month and was recently diagnosed with a heart aneurysm.

“As a result, I will be taking a temporary medical leave of absence in order to take the immediate steps necessary to address the situation and recover,” noted Wyse in the release. “I have been blessed with a window of time where I can focus on my health and do what is needed to recharge for the work ahead. I am grateful to be facing this challenge alongside my family and community.”

While Wyse is on leave, Coun. William Yoachim will remain acting chief for the nation.
