The snow that’s been falling all day in some areas of Nanaimo is expected to continue through the rest of the evening.

A snowfall warning is in effect for the east coast of Vancouver Island from Duncan to Nanaimo and as of late afternoon Friday, Dec. 24, another 2-4 centimetres were expected.

“The heaviest snow is expected this evening before gradually tapering off overnight, notes the warning from Environment Canada.

The City of Nanaimo reminds motorists to “expect winter driving conditions over the holidays” and requests extra caution and patience on the roads. The city said in a social media post this afternoon that it had 12 trucks out plowing and salting.

In addition to the snowfall warning, there is also a special weather statement in effect for the east coast of the Island advising of “very cold temperatures” beginning tonight and continuing through next week. Environment Canada says temperatures will remain “well below seasonal” through the end of December.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” the statement notes. “There will be an increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia with these conditions.”

Environment Canada reminds people to dress appropriately for the weather, ensure external pipes are insulated or drained, and warn against keeping pets outside.

Those who are travelling should ensure their battery is in good condition and that their emergency kit includes blankets.
