Snow and freezing temperatures trigger multiple crashes in and around Nanaimo

Crews respond to more than a dozen collisions as ice builds up on roadways

Snow driven by winds combined with freezing temperatures to make road conditions miserable for motorists in Nanaimo today.

Flurries started around 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, and increased throughout the day to dump about five centimetres on the city. Vehicles quickly packed the snow into ice on pavement, despite efforts but the city to plow and salt major routes, and there were numerous motor vehicle collisions in and around the city.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and other emergency services responded to approximately 15 motor vehicle incidents within the first eight hours of snowy conditions, with vehicles running off the road and colliding with other vehicles, although most crashes appeared to have occurred at slow speeds and there were no reports of serious injuries.

“If possible, please avoid travel. If you do need to drive, slow down and give lots of space…” the City of Nanaimo noted in a social media post, adding that crews are clearing roads in order of priority.
