Milk jugs, pop bottles and frying pans were just a few of the things used to float and propel boats at the 31st annual Silly Boat Regatta.

The Nanaimo Child Development Centre hosted the 31th Annual Silly Boat Regatta on Sunday at Maffeo Sutton Park and raised more than $98,000 to support the Nanaimo Child Development Centre.

Money raised at the event will help provide programs and services to children in our community.

Forty-three teams built and raced their boats from recycled materials.

“The Silly Boat Regatta is an essential fundraiser for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Every program and service we offer is touched by fundraised money and we couldn’t do it without the support of our sponsors, volunteers, teams, and the community,” said Erica Horsfield, communications officer for the centre.

The 2015 Grand Champion Race included the winner from each previous heat, with the Nanaimo Filipino Canadian Association claiming the title as the 2015 Silly Boat Grand Champion. Many teams went home decorated with awards, even the Old Navy Silly Sailors team which was the First to Sink. For more information, please visit www.nanaimocdc.com.
