Nanaimo firefighters snuffed out fires in two flaming shopping carts Thursday.

Residents on Cypress Street sounded the alarm shortly after 4 p.m. when smoke was seen coming from St. George Ravine Park, located between St. George and Cypress streets and Vancouver Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to find two shopping carts, and their contents, burning in the middle of a paved pathway and knocked down the fire with a small fire extinguisher and a shovel.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
