Shallow coal mine discovery leads to temporary road closure

NANAIMO – City crews drilling for utility upgrade come across remains of shallow coal mine.

City of Nanaimo has temporarily closed the intersection at Pine Street, Fifth Street and Victoria Road after city crews discovered a void below the road surface believed to be the remains of a shallow coal mine.

Crews were conducting test drilling for a utility replacement project.

The section of road will be temporarily closed while repairs are carried out. Commuters are encouraged to find alternate routes through the area.
