City of Nanaimo has temporarily closed the intersection at Pine Street, Fifth Street and Victoria Road after city crews discovered a void below the road surface believed to be the remains of a shallow coal mine.

Crews were conducting test drilling for a utility replacement project.

The section of road will be temporarily closed while repairs are carried out. Commuters are encouraged to find alternate routes through the area.
