Seniors in Nanaimo cheer B.C. 55-Plus Games torch relay

Residents of a Nanaimo seniors’ community are fans of the B.C. 55-Plus Games and got to be part of a ceremonial cauldron lighting as the torch relay makes its way to Victoria.

Berwick Retirement Communities is the presenting sponsor of the 55-Plus B.C. Games, and so Nanaimo’s Berwick on the Lake benefited with its own stop on the torch relay tour Thursday, June 2.

Berwick on the Lake residents and staff, previous and current athletes and other special guests gathered for the torch’s arrival by voyageur canoe and a cauldron lighting.

The retirement community, in a press release, noted that several of its residents on the Island are past B.C. 55-Plus Games medallists. Berwick mentioned that its health and wellness focus aligns with the multi-sport event’s goals of fun and competitive sports and recreation participation.

“Being able to host a torch relay and light the cauldron is an exciting way for residents, staff and the greater community to play a fun role in the beginning of the countdown to this significant event,” noted the release.

The Games in Victoria take place Sept. 13-17.
