Semi truck and pickup crash on the highway just north of Nanaimo

No injuries reported after collision at old Island Highway and Nanaimo Parkway

No one was injured when a semi tractor-trailer rig and a pickup truck crashed on the highway in Lantzville this morning.

The incident happened at about 8:45 a.m. Aug. 9 near the old Island Highway-Nanaimo Parkway intersection just north of Nanaimo.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue was initially called out, but the crash happened in Lantzville Fire Rescue’s area.

According Nanaimo RCMP, police spoke with the 36-year-old driver of the pickup who told police he was idling at the intersection and accidentally lifted his foot from the brake for a second while caring for his 18-month-old son, which allowed his Dodge pickup to roll into the intersection. Just at that moment, a southbound semi-tractor, driven by a 38-year-old man, was proceeding south on the parkway. The pickup clipped the side of the semi and caused it to veer off the roadway to the right and come to a stop in the ditch.

The pickup was destroyed while the semi tractor-trailer sustained minor damage.

B.C. paramedics and Lantzville Fire Rescue responded. Paramedics medically cleared the two drivers and toddler.

The intersection was closed for an hour to allow for the truck to be towed and the semi-tractor to be pulled out of the ditch.
