The Regional District of Nanaimo has awarded a contract for berm construction at regional landfill in Cedar.

The Regional District of Nanaimo board has voted to award a $1.8 million tender to Wacor Holdings Ltd. for construction of a berm at the regional landfill in Cedar.

Directors approved the Solid Waste Management Select Committee recommendation at Tuesday's board meeting.

A pair of consultants reports, from Golder Associates and Sperling Hansen Associates, said the landfill and infrastructure could be damaged in the event of an earthquake and recommended berm construction.

The berm, constructed from gravel, is expected to extend the landfill's life another 10 years, according to the regional district.

Work is expected to begin in July and last will about three months.
