Recycling ramps up over holidays

The holiday rush is over at the shopping malls and has resurfaced at the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange.

The holiday rush is over at the shopping malls and has resurfaced at the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange.

Michael Schellinck, NRE executive director, said the exchange was surprisingly busy following Christmas and into the new year.

“I don’t have any numbers yet, but it seems like one of the busiest holiday rushes we have seen,” he said. “People got a big awakening when the holidays were over, realizing they had to clean up, and Sunday and Monday were perfect for taking things down and doing the right thing for the environment.”

Open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, the exchange is a one-stop location for holiday recycling.

“We’re recycling Christmas trees as well as all the other bits like Styrofoam, plastic, paper, cardboard and batteries,” said Schellinck. “Christmas wrap is tough to recycle, but I’d rather take it here than see it go to the landfill.”

The yard waste section saw a steady stream of vehicles over the holidays as nice weather enabled homeowners to tidy up their yards and dump branches, clippings and leaves.

The Nanaimo Recycling Exchange is at 2477 Kenworth Rd.
