After a number of temporary fixes failed, the Regional District of Nanaimo will spend $196,330 to replace the roof of its transportation services building on Applecross Road.

The building is more than 40 years old and has problems with drainage and leaks. G&G Roofing Ltd. is the successful proponent of a construction tender.

Darren Marshall, RDN manager of transit operations, said the existing roof is from the original build and over the years, a substantial amount of moss has grown. Water is pooling in the middle of the roof and not draining and while the regional district has been doing small repairs, the water keeps leaking through. If left much longer, there could be damage to equipment, he said.

“They’re going to install, it’s called a slope package and it’ll wick the water properly to the drains and then they’ll put torch down roofing over top of that to seal the roof off … they’ll still connect to the same drains. It’s a foam package that elevates the roof to force the water to go into those drains. Right now everything’s sloped away from the drains,” said Marshall.

G&G Roofing Ltd. was one of five proponents and its bid represented the lowest tender price, said a regional district staff report.
