The Regional District of Nanaimo board is expected to vote on a $162,000 contract for DBL Disposal Services to ship organic matter derived from wastewater treatment for fertilizer.

DBL, which holds the current contract, expiring June 30, submitted a bid following an April 27 request for quotations and according to an RDN staff report, it was considered the “lowest compliant quotation.” If awarded, DBL will continue hauling leftover organic matter from the RDN’s wastewater treatment at Greater Nanaimo and French Creek pollution control centres to a woodlot owned by TimberWest, where it is used for fertilizer. The deal would be for two years at approximately $81,000 a year.

The RDN committee of the whole gave unanimous approval and the recommendation is expected to go before the regional district board on June 26.

Another recommendation will go before the board that would give the RDN general manager of regional and community utilities and finance director authorization to extend the deal another two years if necessary.
