RCMP officers and staff needed to be evacuated from the detachment building during investigation of a suspicious package.

According to a police press release, the item was found by investigators and brought to the detachment at about 10 p.m.

“Due to the unknown nature of the item and upon further analysis, the decision was made to evacuate the detachment,” the release notes.

The RCMP explosive disposal unit was contacted and was at the detachment this morning to remove the package, which will be disposed of. The building was closed off for more than 10 hours.

“Police services to the citizens of Nanaimo, along with non-emergency lines and 911, were not disrupted during the evacuation. The investigation is continuing,” the press release notes.
