Police are searching what they called a drug and theft house in north Nanaimo today.

RCMP investigators moved in Thursday morning and detained several people in the house, located in the 5300 block of Metral Drive. Two women and one man were arrested and are in police custody, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release.

Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said police have received numerous complaints from area residents over several months.

“The house has caused a lot of angst and anxiety for people living [nearby] and we are dealing with it,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

He categorized the residence as a “drug and theft house” that is home, at any given time, to prolific offenders. He said police will attempt to have the city designate the house as a nuisance property.

“The individuals in that home are directly related to the upswing in theft from property and theft from vehicles in the north end,” O’Brien said. “There’s a number of people flopping there at any given time.”

He said the investigation at the property is still underway and more information will be made available as the investigation progresses.
