Protesters in Nanaimo preach peace in Iran

Rally sees gathering at Diana Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo

Residents rallied in downtown Nanaimo Saturday, advocating for a stop to aggression in the Middle East.

The Rally for Peace, organized by Nanaimo Social Action Network and Food Not Bombs alongside Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, took place at Diana Krall Plaza this afternoon, held in solidarity with ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition’s Global Day of Protest, with a message of ‘No War with Iran.’

Vivian Horne, a speaker and rally participant, said the event is about building peace in the community and to discuss the current events in Iran. Horne said the hope is to create a process of dialogue and emphasize that organizers want to communicate with the community to garner ideas on how to “build peace here.”

“I understand that both sides are aggressors in their own ways and I think that a lot of the approaches are not the right approach,” said Horne, when asked about her views on the situation. “We need to have a good healthy mindset going forward to have a dialogue of peace and co-operation. So we need to work out our differences.”

Approximately 40-50 people were in attendance.
