The Vancouver Island Health Authority is looking for a property owner to provide 20-25 supported housing units in Nanaimo for adults with mental health problems.
The request-for-proposal seeks a five-year service agreement with the successful proponent to provide residential units consisting of a bedroom and bathroom, daily meals for clients, laundry facilities, use of a common space and kitchen and a staff office.
These new units will increase the number of supported housing beds in the city from about 85 to more than 100.
The health authority’s mental health and addiction services staff will provide 24/7 clinical and psychosocial rehabilitation support to clients living in the units and manage admissions and discharges.
Clients will be male and female, semi-independent and ready for supported housing.
“Providing support in the community for our clients with mental health and substance use disorders is a key priority for VIHA,” said Don Hubbard, board chairman, in a press release. “Supported housing is an important step along the path to recovery for our clients and provides assistance in learning and re-learning the skills for independent living, which in turn, leads to improved quality of life.”
