Possible child luring attempted in Nanaimo

Police are reporting a possible child-luring attempt in Nanaimo on the weekend.

Police are reporting a possible child-luring attempt in Nanaimo on the weekend.

The incident happened Saturday at about 9:30 a.m. when two boys, 12 and 13, were holding signs on the corner of Bruce Avenue and Eighth Street advertising a garage sale at Park Avenue School.

A newer model SUV pulled up near the boys and its male driver, holding money, gestured for the boys to come toward the vehicle. The boys refused to approach the SUV and told an adult about the incident.

The driver is described as being Caucasian in his 50s or 60s with short gray hair and a stubble beard. He was driving a newer four-door SUV, dark maroon or black, with yellowish tinted windows, roof rack and a silver stripe five centimetres thick below the doors and running the length of the vehicle.

Police said they do not know the man's intention, but the incident serves as a reminder for children not to approach strangers, as well as to call 911 and tell an adult to report suspicious behaviour.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.nanaimo.crimestoppers.com.
