Police warn public about counterfeit cash

Police on Vancouver Island are warning people to keep a close eye on their cash.

Police on Vancouver Island are warning people to keep a close eye on their cash.

Counterfeit $100 bills have been popping up all over western Canada since June 1, said Const. Gary O'Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

He said there are also fake $20's and $10's floating around and all the bills bear the same serial number.

There have been 14 instances of counterfeit bills showing up in Nanaimo since June.

"We're still trying to get a handle on who's responsible," O'Brien said. "All we're getting is the bottom feeders that are being offered $20 to go cash $100."

He said businesses must be extremely careful about checking bills to make sure they are genuine.
