Warmer weather is making its way to parts of B.C., and already police are getting reports of dogs being left in hot cars.

Victoria police responded to two incidents where dogs had been left in vehicles Thursday afternoon. In both instances, officers had to smash a window to free the pets.

They were handed over to animal control and the cars were towed.

Police spokesperson Bowen Osoko couldn’t say exactly how long they’ve been left in the cars.

Neither driver was charged, Osoko said, but people who do leave their dogs in vehicles can face charges including mischief and animal cruelty.

Pet owners probably just don’t realize how warm it is when the sun’s out, he said, adding that year after year people still aren’t getting the message.
