Police nab suspect in antique boat heist

Nanaimo RCMP gave chase after an 1923 antique wooden boat is stolen from Anchorage Marina.

A 41-year-old man is in custody after police caught up to an antique wooden boat stolen from a Nanaimo marina.

Nanaimo police say the caretaker of Anchorage Marina alerted police to a vessel tearing out of the marina at a high rate of speed at about 4 a.m. this morning.

Officers used binoculars to track the boat until they could give chase in their police vessel. Several police officers caught up to the boat an hour later as it made its way between Protection and Newcastle Islands.

A 41-year-old Vancouver man suspected of the heist was arrested and taken to Nanaimo. The suspect will be appearing in Nanaimo Provincial court today on charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
