Police dog sniffs out fugitive's hiding spot

NANAIMO – Police dog tracks fugitive to attic hiding place in Old City Quarter home.

Police service dog Boomer is getting credit for sniffing out a fugitive's hiding place in an attic in Nanaimo's Old City Quarter.

The chase was on Wednesday at about 11:30 a.m. when an officer spotted a 37-year-old Nanaimo man, wanted on outstanding warrants, near the Milton and Hecate streets intersection.

The suspect fled, so more police were called in along with police service dog Boomer, which followed a trail to a home on the 500 block of Kennedy Street the suspect had forced his way into. A 25-year-old university student, who was home during the forced entry, put police in touch with a roommate who gave permission to enter and search the house.

When Boomer located the suspect in the attic his handler lifted the dog into the space to flush the suspect out of his hiding spot. The suspect resisted the arrest attempt, so Boomer bit him several times, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody and treated at the scene by paramedics.

Favian Larouche has been charged with one count of unlawfully in a dwelling and will be held in custody until Feb. 10.
