Plaque placed at Extension park to remember longtime RDN director

Maureen Young served her area of the Regional District of Nanaimo for more than 16 years

A late Regional District of Nanaimo director has been immortalized at one of her favourite parks in the area she represented for more than a decade and a half.

A plaque was unveiled for Maureen Young at Extension Miners Community Park on Wednesday afternoon, June 15, at a ceremony featuring a large crowd that included present and former RDN directors. Young died Nov. 18 after a battle with cancer.

Nanaimo-born and Extension-raised, she sat at the RDN board table as director for Area C (Extension, East Wellington and Pleasant Valley) for more than 16 years.

She was passionate about her area’s coal mining history, noted an RDN press release, and Miners Community Park has a coal car exhibit, complete with a timber shelter.

Her son David Young said the family is honored to have his mother’s name connected with the park.

“The community involvement is really why Mom was here. Her director position was driven by passion for the rural communities that she served,” David Young said. “If you had a chance to speak to Mom, it was evident. She enjoyed it so much and she did talk a lot on the phone, so it’s not just work. It was hours on end.”

Charles Pinker, who served as Young’s alternate on the board and now her successor, said it was a privilege knowing her.

“She was one very dedicated member to the Extension community and to the regional district also and as far as I’m concerned, this plaque, dedicated to her, will be a great legacy to remember her by for years to come,” he said.
