Person and pet avoid injury in house fire in Nanaimo

Nanaimo Fire Rescue able to knock down fire on Glenayr Drive quickly

A resident and her pet were unharmed but a house in Nanaimo was left uninhabitable after being damaged by fire this afternoon.

Nanaimo RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service and numerous Nanaimo Fire Rescue vehicles responded to a report of a structure fire in the 2400 block of Glenayr Drive at noon on Friday, Feb. 17.

Police initially blocked off the entrance to the street at Argyle Avenue, and smoke was seen billowing out of the chimney and streaming out the front door. Troy Libbus, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief, said three engines and one truck responded.

There was extensive damage to the front part of the house and up into the soffits, said the assistant chief, and also window and smoke damage. Firefighters have boarded up the house.

“The person inside was unaware that there was a fire until somebody knocked on her window alerting her and she and her dog came out safely,” said Libbus. “Smoke detectors did work in the house and no one was injured. Engine 2 was in command and they responded quickly and knocked down the fire on the exterior … and the fire was knocked down fairly quickly.”

The cause has not yet been determined. Fire prevention officers will conduct an inspection next week.

The residents are insured.
