Pedestrian struck in downtown Nanaimo crosswalk

NANAIMO – Man hit by car while jogging through downtown crosswalk.

Police are investigating why a pedestrian was struck by a car in a crosswalk at the intersection of Terminal Avenue and Commercial Street.

The male victim, believed to be in his 60s, was jogging across the crosswalk Monday, at about 9:45 a.m., when he was hit by an older model Pontiac Sunfire, driven by an elderly woman, who was turning southbound onto Terminal Avenue from Commercial Street.

The force of the impact caused the victim to strike the windshield of the car.

The victim was conscious, but had visible cuts to his hands at the scene where he was treated by paramedics before being taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

Speed and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the accident.

The driver was not injured and is co-operating with investigators and car sustained a broken windshield and was towed from the scene.
