Paper shredding for Crime Stoppers cash

NANAIMO – Paper shredding event raises identity theft awareness and cash for Crime Stoppers.

Nanaimo Crime Stoppers program is teaming up with Save On Foods and Island Document Storage and Shredding to raise awareness about identity theft along with some cash for Crime Stoppers.

Saturday (Jan. 26) 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers volunteers will do the cooking at a barbecue hosted by Save-On-Foods while island Document Storage and Shredding Services will be on hand to destroy documents bearing personal information that could be used or sold by identity thieves.

Identity theft techniques include dumpster diving, mail theft and even more elaborate schemes to obtain information such as full names and addresses, dates of birth, social insurance numbers, mothers maiden names, driver’s license and credit card information, bank account numbers, signatures and passport numbers. Victims of identity theft can suffer serious financial loss and have difficulty obtaining credit and reestablishing credibility.

People with documents containing personal information lying around their homes waiting to be disposed of can bring their documents to Terminal Park and shred their way to better identity security.

Shredding is by donations supporting Crime Stoppers programs.
