Paint out illustrates Nanaimo harbour

People are invited to bring their cameras, sketch books, paints and brushes to the downtown Nanaimo Boat Basin Sunday (March 24).

People are invited to bring their cameras, sketch books, paints and brushes to the downtown Nanaimo Boat Basin Sunday (March 24) for the Save Our Harbour Paint Out event.

Carl Ashley, a Protection Island resident and event organizer, said the idea is to illustrate the harbour in its current state because he believes it could look different if the Nanaimo Port Authority decides to go forward with a plan to lease the Boat Basin to a private company for the next 30 years.

"Right now, (the harbour has) got character, it's iconic," he said. "It's not a demonstration, it's an illustration. My point is just to illustrate that what value it is to the arts community will be lost when it becomes a private marina. Come and join me if you want to paint our harbour the way it is before it changes."

The paint out happens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Ashley plans to hold an after show at CHLY 101.7 FM headquarters in the Globe Hotel building on Front Street from 2 p.m. onward.

He also hopes to organize another show later with more completed pieces.
