One person hurt as rollover crash ties up rush-hour traffic in Nanaimo

Pickup and compact car collide at old Island Highway and Departure Bay Road

One person was injured in a rollover crash on the highway through Nanaimo during rush hour this evening.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of the old Island Highway and Departure Bay Road just before 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, after a pickup truck and a compact car collided and the pickup rolled onto its side.

Crews on scene said the woman who had been driving the car was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with unknown injuries, while occupants of the truck weren’t hurt.

The highway’s northbound lanes and Departure Bay Road’s southbound turn lanes are both closed, and other nearby routes are also affected as additional traffic coming off the ferry added to congestion in the area.

There were 19 crashes at the intersection of the old Island Highway and Departure Bay Road in 2019, according to ICBC statistics, and 84 crashes there during the five-year period from 2017-2021.
