Old-growth logging protesters blocked the highway in Nanaimo for the second time this week in hopes of getting what they want from the B.C. government.
Members of the Save Old Growth campaign blocked the Trans-Canada Highway at Cranberry Road on Friday, April 8, with one protester supergluing himself to the highway and getting arrested.
The protesters are asking for the province to pass legislation to immediately end all old-growth logging in B.C.
“We’re past signing petitions, writing letters and doing marches. The people in power have ignored these for decades. Unfortunately that isn’t enough, at this time we all need to be entering into civil resistance,” said Julia Torgerson, a spokesperson for Save Old Growth, in a press release.
The province has been consulting with First Nations on old-growth logging deferrals and has a 2023 target to extend protection for up to 2.6 million hectares of forest identified as at risk of permanent habitat loss.
