Old-growth logging protesters block another Nanaimo intersection

Extinction Rebellion at Comox Road and Terminal Avenue

Protesters trying to put a stop to logging of B.C.’s old-growth forests are, in the meantime, trying to put a stop to traffic in downtown Nanaimo.

Extinction Rebellion, for a second-straight Monday, blocked an intersection along the Trans-Canada Highway in Nanaimo, this time at Terminal Avenue-Comox Road-Front Street. The intersection has now re-opened but protesters are continuing to rally on the side of the road.

The protest is part of civil disobedience related to Extinction Rebellion’s Save Old Growth campaign and organizers say they will continue to disrupt highway travel around the province until the provincial government shows “genuine intent to urgently act” and do more to protect old-growth trees.

“The frequency and scale of actions will escalate until all old growth logging is stopped,” said Brent Eichler, campaign spokesperson for Save Old Growth. The government has an option to fulfill its election promises or send non-violent people on the motorways to jail.”
