Instead of approaching speeding in school zones in the traditional way, Parksville Qualicum Beach is taking a different approach.

The Oceanside RCMP, ICBC and School District 69 have teamed up to spread a message to drivers, urging them to slow down in school zones. Students from the district have decorated cards that say, “Think of me, please slow down!” with personal messages and pictures, which will be handed out to people who speed.

Staff Sergeant Marc Pelletier has given more than 100 of the ‘Think of Me’ tickets to drivers in school zones. The notes are given in place of official police warnings at RCMP discretion.

“I believe this has had a very positive impact on motorists as they are receiving a personal note from the students located in the very school zone in which they are speeding,” said Pelletier.
