No strike at VIU this week

Classes continue as normal at Vancouver Island University this week.

Classes will continue as normal at Vancouver Island University this week as mediation continues between support workers and the employer.

On Oct. 29, support staff at the institution voted 86 per cent in favour of job action and later in the week, the two parties agreed to bring in a private mediator to assist in the collective bargaining process.

A joint release from VIU and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1858 states that the parties met with mediator Mark Brown over the weekend and are making progress toward achieving a renewed collective agreement.

The parties will continue discussions this week and during this period, there will be no job action.

The next update will be on Tuesday (Nov. 13), or earlier if events warrant it.

CUPE Local 1858 represents nearly 300 employees, including food services, clerical and maintenance workers, at VIU's five campuses.

Updates will be available at www.viu.ca/labourupdate, the CUPE website at www.cupe1858.org and on Twitter @VIUNews.
