Gabriola Island residents will now have more space to enjoy at Cox Community Park, with the addition of 16 hectares of land.

The Regional District of Nanaimo announced in a press release that the adjoining land, south of the park, was added as part of the Island’s Trust land-use planning process via the Mallet Creek subdivision development last October. It will include a 1.5-kilometre section of trail with new signs and mapping, said the press release, linking Lockinvar Lane to Gabriola’s medical clinic.

Vanessa Craig, RDN Gabriola Island area director and parks and open space advisory committee chairperson, was pleased the new addition is now open.

This addition to one of Gabriola Island’s most popular parks will be well used by residents,” Craig said in the press release. “Thank you to the Gabriola Lands and Trails Trust volunteers who assisted with constructing the new trails in Cox Community Park.”

Feedback will be elicited from the public in the fall on “emerging needs and a long-term management strategy to guide future developments” at the park, said the press release, and trail networks and connections will be considered.
