New garbage calendars are on the way as the City of Nanaimo gets ready to launch its new automated collection service.

The calendars, which cover nine months, are being handed out earlier than usual this year with the city starting its first phase of automated solid waste collection in late October.

While only central Nanaimo is getting the new service, all homes will get a new calendar and have changes to their collection schedule, according to a city press release. Changes to the solid waste collection cycle means the month of October doesn’t follow a regular add-a-day pattern.

“The delivery of these new, easy-to-read calendars is part of the wider changes coming to solid waste collection in Nanaimo this year and next,”said Charlotte Davis, the city’s manager of sanitation, recycling and public works administration, in the press release. “I ask residents to pay close attention to their new calendar to see changes to their schedule.”

Homes in central Nanaimo will get three new wheeled carts for recycling, organics and garbage between Oct. 10-27 for automated pick up and a special symbol will be included the garbage calendars next week to let people know when to start using them. Automated service will begin for people between Oct. 23-Nov.3.

“Residents really don’t need to do anything,” said Davis. “Carts will be delivered automatically in advance of their first automated collection day with an information package explaining how to use them.”

Residents can also download the Nanaimo Recycles app, which sends reminders to their phone and has been automatically updated with the new collection schedule. Those without a smart phone can sign up for a free telephone reminder service by calling public works at 250-758-5222.
