Neighbour rescues woman from burning house

NANAIMO – Cause of kitchen fire under investigation by Nanaimo Fire Rescue.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue investigators are still probing the cause of a fire in a kitchen that sent a woman to hospital on Friday.

The blaze, at a residence on Wavecrest Drive, was discovered by a neighbour shortly before 6 p.m.

"There was a fire on the floor in her kitchen," said Capt. Ennis Mond, fire prevention officer. "The neighbour's daughter saw the smoke coming from the house and went and alerted her dad."

The girl's father rushed over, but got no response when he pounded on the front door and yelled through a window.

The man discovered the woman on the floor when he went around the back of the house.

"So, he slid the door open, grabbed her and pulled her out to safety," Mond said. "Then he took a garden hose and put the fire out."

Mond did not have an update on the woman's condition and had not determined the exact cause of the fire, which is still under investigation.
