Parties are taking advantage of the chance to attract crowds once again to campaign events.
New Democratic Party candidate Lisa Marie Barron held her campaign launch event on Wednesday at Maffeo Sutton Park’s Lions Pavilion, the same place Green Party incumbent Paul Manly held his campaign kick-off event three days earlier.
Barron outlined some of the NDP’s commitments such as “head-to-toe” health care and ideas to combat climate change and provide affordable housing, but the event was more a rallying cry for people to get involved in the election campaign.
“When we have more New Democrats in Ottawa, the lives of everyday people continue to get better…” Barron said. “The Greens have had their chance to make an impact in this riding, but the reality is when we have NDP people and power in government, we get things done. We’ve shown this time and time again.”
She was endorsed by Nanaimo MLA and B.C. NDP cabinet minister Sheila Malcolmson, who said New Democrats have been leaders in bringing social justice programs to Canadians.
“It is a people-powered movement … to get results for people and take action for people,” she said.
The Greens were holding a sign wave along Terminal Avenue just as the NDP campaign event was about to begin, but Manly said that wasn’t intentional and noted his campaign office is just down the block on Terminal.
Aside from the NDP’s Barron and the Green Party’s Manly, other candidates in Nanaimo-Ladysmith include Tamara Kronis of the Conservative Party and Michelle Corfield of the Liberal Party.
