Nanaimo's Beban Park pool will close for the rest of the summer as the city dives into a $500,000 revamp.
The City of Nanaimo plans to shut down the Beban Park pool and weight room for more than a month starting July 27, as it starts upgrades and maintenance.
The pool project, slated to cost approximately $500,000, follows on the heels of a major $1.9-million renovation project at the recreational facility's Cliff McNabb Arena and will include retrofits of pool sauna and steam room for $223,000, as well as a $100,000 switch from chlorine gas to chlorine pucks. A city press release says the pool's pirate ship will also be removed because it is outdated and has rusted and deteriorating footings. A replacement improvement plan will look at new spray features.
Changes to the weight room include two new pieces of equipment and mirror replacement. The cost is unknown.
“The work being done at Beban Park pool and weight room is going to give them a fresh, clean look,” said Damon Johnston, the city’s assistant manager of aquatics. “We thank the public for their patience and invite them to enjoy the amenities at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre and Westwood Lake during this time.”
The pool will shut down during the B.C. Summer Games July 17-20 and again for the renovations, on July 27 to Sept. 2.
