A Nanaimo resident will lead a delegation of Canadians to New York this month to discuss global development in issues ranging from extreme poverty to gender equality.
Susan Murphy, a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women, will be leading a 14-person group to the United Nations Commission on Status of Women meetings across the border.
The commission, dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women, will focus on the challenges and accomplishments around Millennium Development Goals, a series of targets around poverty, education and equality.
Meetings run from March 10-21.
“We are delighted that [Susan Murphy] is leading the CFUW delegation to the United Nations meetings,” said Roberta Veenstra, CFUW Nanaimo president. “This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss matters of common concern with women from around the world and to provide a Canadian perspective to international issues.”
CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary organization that has been working to improve the status of women, promote human rights, public education and peace. Nanaimo has more than 120 members.
