Council must work vigorously and quickly to try and regain the confidence of both residents and property owners in this fine city of Nanaimo. Council must embark on a “Core Review” of all aspects of spending that impacts the taxpayers of Nanaimo. Tax increases should be kept at a rate on par or below that of the cost of living increases. There are many residents on fixed incomes or struggling financially, who cannot afford to keep paying higher taxes and fees. The property owners in the Green Lake area should be provided with hook ups to the sanitary sewer system at a fair and equitable rate.

Shifting spending priorities to make Nanaimo a better and more affordable community by improving health, lowering costs, and encouraging tourism, for example. By shifting where the taxpayer’s money is spent we can accomplish so much more. For example, instead of widening Bowen Road, we could encourage more cycling and walking by providing trails and raised surfaces alongside roads. This reduces costs, increases health and a sense of community, reduces pollution and noise, and makes a safer community. Such measures make us more sustainable – economically, socially and environmentally.

Provide direction and a strategic plan to city staff. Continue to work at reducing the size of tax increases this year before the budget is finalized.
